The development and production company for relay calculators, Casio Computer Co. was started in 1957 but quickly branched out from calculators. By the early 1970s, they were involved in a few different lines including quartz timepieces. They focused on watches that didn’t require careful handling and instead were hard to break. Casio’s first watches featured shock and vibration resistance while still keeping time in hard conditions. Five layers of protection were put in place making them water-resistant and able to take a beating. This made them very desirable among people who worked in more dangerous occupations such as firefighters.
It was the skateboarding community that popularized Casio’s G-SHOCK line in the 1990s. Casio continued to develop different styles within the G-SHOCK line including full metal watches. They also created a woman’s line called BABY-G. Throughout everything, they have strived to create tough watches that appeal to people from all walks of life.
